Can you make tartan? (Weaving Paper)

Do you know what tartan is? Do you know where it comes from? Have you ever made tartan before?

The Oxford Dictionary states “a woollen cloth woven in one of several patterns of coloured checks and intersecting lines, especially of a design associated with a particular Scottish clan.”

We have been looking at family tartans and the patterns within the tartans. Some children have designed their own, some children have replicated their family or chosen tartan.

We are also looking at family mottos and naming our tartan’s. It’s been a great side project for our Art exhibition for school.

What do you think so far?

Are you good at saving money?

Get Wise: ASB

Thank you to Jeff from Get Wise: ASB who taught us some very valuable skills about our finances.

ASB = Auckland Savings Bank

INCOME - EXPENSES = SAVING

Income = money from jobs / chores / selling, money coming in, regular money
Expenses = spending money, food/transport, regular spending (bills)
Saving = money not used in expenses

GWYWP = Get What You Want Plan

The children were split up into teams and were given $1,800 to spend on a holiday to Fiji (wouldn't that be fabulous holiday to look forward to right now?) 1 week in Fiji over Christmas.
The children looked at
  • Passport: prices and the organisation of passports
  • Flights: economy vs business
  • Stay: hotels vs resorts vs motels
  • Insurance: what if somethings happens, costs behind them
  • Exchange rates: flat rates and looking for good deals

Orchards in Schools

Have you ever heard of Orchards in Schools?

Belfast School is lucky enough to have been involved in this programme.
On Monday we planted 4 pear trees, 4 apple trees, 4 plum trees and finally 2 feijoa trees - such an amazing variety.
Room 21 planted these trees with the guidance of Mary from Orchard Schools.
We can't wait to get fruits from there trees.
What do you think we should make with them?
